Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that [CloudHQ will invest US $4.8 billion to build six data centers in Querétaro](https://mexiconewsdaily.com/politics/data-centers-thursdays-mananera-recapped/), an area already suffering from water shortages.
This is coming from a 'leftist' government, the same government that has agreed to allow [Amazon to 'solve' Mexico City's water problem](https://mexiconewsdaily.com/business/amazon-mexico-city-water-infrastructure-project/). Which should remind us of the precarious position of the Global South when it comes to 'progress.' Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Mexico can't afford to turn down such offers, specially in light of a [slowing economy](https://mexiconewsdaily.com/business/mexico-economy-july-growth-forecasts/) (which is supposed to pick up next year, thanks in part to deals like the one with CloudHQ).
> \[Economy Minister] Ebrard said it was “very difficult” to say how much data center and AI projects would add to Mexico’s GDP in the near term, but he asserted that such projects would be **“one of the main drivers”** of the Mexican and global economy in the years ahead.
Totally reassuring, right? Meanwhile, Mexico is not only dealing with the chaos of Trump's TACO tariff policies, but is under pressure from the US to [impose its own tariffs on Chinese EVs](https://www.carscoops.com/2025/09/mexico-to-hit-chinese-vehicles-with-50-tariff/) and other products (which is making [China angry](https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/companies/china-launches-an-investigation-into-mexicos-tariffs-on-imports-from-asia/ar-AA1NkGzZ)).
I guess this is what Non Alignment looks like: carefully navigating the waters between Scylla and Charybdis. /Ulises
